Stay where the past meets the present!
ASPENGR Monastiraki Hotel Apartments is ideally located in the very heart of Athens, under the shadow of the Acropolis, in one of the most storied and atmospheric neighbourhoods in the Western world. Monastiraki is not just the cityβs bustling downtown districtβit is one of its most ancient, layered, and vibrant quarters, with continuous habitation stretching back over 6,000 years. Its name comes from the Greek word monastiri, meaning βlittle monastery,β and refers to the nunnery that once stood in the central square. The small Byzantine church of Panagia Pantanassa, a remnant of that monastery, still stands proudly in the square, bearing witness to centuries of history, from the Byzantine period to the Frankish and Ottoman eras.
During the Ottoman period, Monastiraki was both a religious and commercial centre. The square was home to the Tzistarakis Mosque, built in 1759 by the Ottoman governor Mustafa Agha Tzistarakis, using marble taken from ancient ruinsβa bold act believed to have caused a famine and unrest, giving rise to legends that still echo in local lore. Today, the mosque houses a branch of the Museum of Greek Folk Art, showcasing pottery and cultural artifacts from Greece, Asia Minor, and beyond. The square itself continues to serve as a natural gathering point, alive with street food vendors, buskers, and Athenians going about their day.
Wandering Monastiraki is like peeling back the layers of time. Beneath the cobblestones of the square runs the ancient river Eridanusβsacred to the ancient Atheniansβwhose rediscovered riverbed created significant challenges during the construction of the modern metro station. A portion of the river and accompanying archaeological finds are now visible within the station itself, offering a rare glimpse into the cityβs subterranean past. From here, the streets lead to some of the most iconic landmarks of the ancient world: the Ancient Agora, the political and social heart of classical Athens; the Roman Agora and the Tower of the Winds, considered the worldβs first meteorological station; Hadrianβs Library, built in 132 AD by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a gift to the city; and the remarkably preserved Temple of Hephaestus, standing tall just as it did in antiquity.
“
Monastirakiβs charm lies not only in its monuments but also in its everyday vitality. From the traditional kebab shops at the entrance of Mitropoleos Street to the nearby Andrianou Street, lined with cafes and restaurants overlooking the Acropolis, life here is full of colour, history, and flavour. The surrounding districts of Plaka, Anafiotika, Psyrri, and Thissio enrich the experience even further, offering neoclassical architecture, artisan shops, and cozy bars that hum with the energy of modern Athens.
The streets of Monastiraki have long played host to the rhythms of daily life. Hephaestus Street, one of the main arteries of the neighbourhood, is lined with shoemakers, clothing boutiques, and record shops. It leads to Abyssinia Square, the traditional centre of Athensβ flea market and antique trade, where furniture restorers and collectors keep alive the craftsmanship of old Athenian homes. On Sunday afternoons, this square transforms into a lively social scene, with locals enjoying traditional tavern meals accompanied by live bands and the chatter of traders.
Just a short walk from Monastiraki Square is Syntagma, the seat of the Greek Parliament and the site of the ceremonial Changing of the Guard. In the opposite direction lies the Kerameikos archaeological site, the ancient cemetery of Athens. All around, echoes of the past are woven seamlessly into the fabric of the present. The neighbourhoodβs historical heart beats alongside vibrant city lifeβits flea markets, spice shops, street musicians, and hidden courtyards offering endless paths to explore.
